Ion Review

I felt like this script had more potential as the space limited them and the acting performances were not quite what I expected. I felt the storyline was cut too short and was left disappointed. However, I must exclude some of the actor's performances as I believe they acted to an extremely high standard and if given the opportunity, this piece of theatre could have been great.

Lady Chatterly's Lover

I was actually disappointed with this show. From looking at the storyline, I expected the performance to be full of lust and passion, but I felt that the two leading actor's performances were life less and left me cold. But I did quite like the costume, it was beautifully designed and faithful to the time period.

Phantom of the Opera

Andrew Lloyd Weber's Phantom is definitely my guilty pleasure! Even after my second time seeing this show is was still dumb-founded by it. I loved the songs, the performer's voices were out of this world and the staging was just fantastic. My seat gave a perfect view of both the action in the rafters and on stage, so I was extremely happy watching the show again and would be more then happy to watch it again.

'Fiddler on the Roof' 300 word Review

If you are thinking of taking musical theatre at Bath Spa University, this is definitely the show to entice you to do it. On the 7th of April at the Bath Spa University Theatre, many theatre and music students collaborated to make a fun, energetic and highly professional version of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ which portrays the story of a Jewish family living in Russia during the time of WW2. We watch the father and head of the family (Tevye) try to follow tradition whilst encountering the hardships the war brings his community. With an orchestra, convenient and cleverly designed sets helped deliver a humorous and heart warming performance.

Before the performance, I had heard of this play, but never had any idea of what it could be about. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the great standard of the songs as they were extremely fun, energetic and the choreography that followed was well done and seemed very professional. I was particularly impressed with the opening number, “Tradition” as it was very well directed and the musicians and performers striking in their talent. I really do believe that the standard of the orchestra was fantastic; they played beautifully and truly brought an excellent live quality to the show.

Even though the performance was greatly amusing, there were some negative points that brought down the standard of the show. I went to see the performance on the first night of showing, therefore I expected there to be some mistakes and nervous acting. However, as I said before overall the show was very professional, there were minor incidences that brought me back to the reality this was an academic/amateur production. Examples of this were sound levels were often uneven or too loud and cast members forgetting their queues or lines. This was slightly disappointing as I was so impressed with the high level of this proficient production. Nevertheless, I was still pleased with this amusing and homely version of this story.

Fiddler on the Roof

For the first night of the show, I thought the show went really well, even though there were some technical faults. I went to watch the show with a fresh perspective as I didn't know the storyline and was pleasantly surprised as I enjoyed the show very much. I thought that stage spacing could have been tidier however, as during the choreography sequences; I caught the actors bumping into each other and or objects on stage, which could've been remedied with rehearsals within the stage space.

The Others

I thought this performance was incredible. They managed to create a mixture of comedy and serious drama really well that I just sat there stunned. The choreography and the movement was amazing, especially the part when one of the actresses was reading a letter that looked like it was from a bird's eye view. The actor's performances were brilliant and overall i thought it was an exciting and original piece of theatre.

Under Milk Wood: Live on Air

Before I saw the show I didn't know what to expect as I had never heard of this play and had a sense that I would not enjoy the performance. However I was pleasantly surprised as I really enjoyed it. The first half was hilarious as I was constantly anticipating what the drunken sound woman would do next. Even though I found it hard to follow all the stories, I was still able to enjoy the performance as the actors were so captivating with thier use of voice that I did not care for the stories that much.

Masquerade

The choreography of thhis show was absolutlely amazing and I was extremely impressed with the skill of the performers. All of the routines seemed so perfect and fluid, my attention was constantly kept. However, I did not like the style of the masks they used for this performance as they made me feel uncomfortable, and I could see them using another style of masks that would have been more effective. My favourite part of this performance was when 2 female and 2 male perfomers did a synchronised sequence where their trust in eachother and expression was incredible.

The Nutcracker

Even though the I felt I shouldn't have been a member of that audience, I had so much fun I felt the biggest kid in that audience. The performers certainly made me laugh and when the toy war started, I was smiling and squealing like a little girl. The set was adorable, especially the set of the house which I thought was cleverly done. In general, a fantastic show that I could easily watch again!

Landscape and Monologue

I never knew the true meaning of monotone until seeing these two short plays. The female lead did not have variation to what she had to say and it seemed extremely boring, however I must exclude the two male leads as they captured my attention really well. It was great to see some raw acting and without the hype of special effects, but I felt it was lacking something.
